What is the difference between using this on a blaster compared to a plain piece of 3/8 rubber hose?

This hose is made with a tough heavy duty rubber material and has the molded elbow. A plain rubber hose will wear out faster.

The molded elbow attaches to the suction tube of a siphon blaster, and helps prevent kinking or "riding out" when the tube is inserted into a bucket or bag of abrasive and you are moving about with the nozzle
