There are many variables when calculating the tonnage of a log splitter. They are the diameter of the cylinder being used, and the hydraulic pressure being applied.
The formula for calculating force is as follows: Force=Area X Pressure
So using this cylinder as an example and using a 3000 psi hydraulic pump the formula is
((4x4)x.785)x3000 = 37,680 pounds of force.
37,680 pounds equals 18.8 tons of force.

depends on some other factors. i just built one with this with a 6.5hp motor an 11gpm pump and a 8.5x7" puch plate on the piston and im around 24-25 (if my math is correct)
