Can be used in any area, does not require venting, however the heat output from this unit was hardly felt from my fireplace. It looked excellent, but I bought it for a heat factor also and it did not meet my expectation.

The Duraflame Electric Log Set does not make any sound except for the minor hum of the blower. Northern does sell a Kracklebox fireplace sound system (#172950) to provide convincing, realistic sounds of a crackling log fire.

The bottom front. What looks like the black space between the front 'cast iron legs' at the bottom is the blower exit port, so it blows warm air straight out into the room along the floor.

The blower is nicely concealed behind a finely perforated grate underneath the metal-looking, vertical "rungs" of the grate holding the logs. You can't see it -- you can obviously hear it when it's running, but it's not so loud that it's annoying when running.

We installed ours in a prefab fireplace (the fireplace was already in the house when we bought it but we did not want to have to deal with the wood, ash, soot etc.) we just put it into the existing little fireplace and it is perfect.
