The manufacturer cautions against putting anything which may be flammable near the front (within 3ft) or the sides of the unit. Ours is sitting directly on a standard short pile carpet and does not overheat the carpet fibers. I would say it depends on the material composition of the carpet, the condidtion of the carpet and what chemicals is may have within the fibers. If you are concerned about it I would recommend using a hearth rug designed for use in front of wood stoves or fireplaces. Another alternative would be to construct a small framed tile/stone/brick surfaced platform to place it on.

I have my Duraflame sitting on carpet and have never had a problem. The carpet gets somewhat warm but not hot. The fan forces the warm air out and up. Plus, the body of the heater stays cool too. I like it because not only is it a great working, cheap to run heater and cute too, but safe for my dogs to be around.

I use mine in my carpeted den with no problems. The fan doesnt blow out of the bottom straight down. The vents face outward below the door and inches above the actual floor. The description of the heat coming from the bottom can be confusing but the heater unit is under the flame cabinet but does not blow straight down at the floor but more outward a few inches above the floor.

answer 5
I wouldn't hesitate to have it resting on carpeting. The heat that it produces is not going to damage your carpet or be a fire hazard. It just needs proper ventilation in the back and on the bottom (i.e., carpeting should not touch the unit as then you won't have proper ventilation but outside of that if you have a 3-4" clearance you would be fine.

This model does not come with a remote control. Located behind the swing out door are two backlit rocker switches for On/Off control of the flames and the heater element. Once a switch is ON you can use the corresponding rotary dial to adjust either the thermostat setting or the intensity of the flame.

Question

What material and gauge is the outer cabinet? Does it get to hot to place what-nots on it?

Cabinet materials should be included in all the heater descriptions as a rule. This will allow me to make a quicker decision.

I bought this Duraflame last November. It's of heavy metal and stays cool to the touch. The top has always stayed cool so I, in my opinion, can't see any harm in putting a knick knack or two on it. It's very cute and heavy, so it won't tip over. You'll love your stove! Best buy I've made in a long time!

The body is steel (no gauge from manufacturer), the door and legs are high impact plastic. The cabinet will get warm, it will not burn you. The grill on the bottom can get very hot. It is not recommended to put anything on the heater.

Staff Answer
The amount that running this heater will add to your electric bill will vary by the amount that you use the heater and the amount that you pay for your electricity. This heater consumes approximately 1350 watts. or 1.35 kw/hour. You can estimate the cost by multiplying 1.35 by the number of hours you estimate that the heater will be running during a given period then multiplying that quantity by the amount that your power company charges per kilowatt hour.

For example if you were to run this heater 3 hours per day for a 30 day month you would use 121.5 kilowatt hours if you were paying $0.12 per kilowatt hour it would cost you $14.58 per month or $0.48 per day.
3 x30 x 1.35 x 0.12 = $14.58

I ran my Duraflame in the mornings and evenings. It cost me 50 cents a day and the room I have it in stayed very warm and comfortable. I saved at least 165 bucks a month not using my house furnace this year. I love my heater!

I can only answer with my experience but my electric bill is actually $25-40 less than comparable months of Dec, Jan and Feb of last year. This is due to the fact that my furnace is running less, saving not only heating oil but electricity as well and we are still toasty warm on the coldest of winter days.

This is one great little heater. Personally, I never sleep with any type of heater on. This heater will warm your room well, and if you keep a rug against the lower part of your door to keep the warm air in, it should keep the temperature do-able until morning. Electric blankets are a great bet over night.

Question

Hi, Does this require the 3ft, minimum around it, as many do, or is it one of those 0-degree clearance stoves (where you can put it against a wall)?

Just wondering if it needs clearance all around it or not (including the sides) in order to determine if we have the space for it or not.

Thanks!

Hi, I have my stove up against the wall with about a 2 inch clearnace. The body of the stove stays cool and so does everything around it. Great that I don't have to worry about my dogs playing by it and it's heavy enough that it doesn't tip if they bump into it while playing. This is one great heater, I love mine!

As long as the stove never got wet, and had proper ventilation in the back and on the bottom, I would think it would be fine. I would store it inside the house over spring/summer months so that it is not exposed to humidity. Even if covered, I don't think being on the porch, covered, with the humidity would be good for it and may make it have issues down the road.
