The controller comes with a bracket and short panhead screws to mount it below your dashboard. I actually mounted mine sideways on my center console so my shin wouldn't hit it when driving.

This brake controller is activated by pressing on the brake pedal. The longer the brake pedal is held down the power increases to trailer brakes. It also has adjustments for application of force to trailer brakes.

E1 means the controler is not detecting a trailer. Mine always reads E1 until I have a trailer hooked up.

answer 3
The E1 code shows when there isn't a trailer hooked up and you depress the brake pedal. Once you hook up a trailer, the unit should read what your current setting is.

answer 2
I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 and you would have to splice into the wiring, but you can buy the "TAP Brake Control Connector - Chevy, GMC, Cadillac" along with the hopkins controller and it plugs right into your existing wiring without having to cut into anything, (plug & play). the directions are really simple and hook up is about 10 minutes or less.
