The owners manual for this engine recommends 10w30 weight oil in most temperatures and 5w30 weight oil in extremely cold temperatures. These are both common oil weights and should be available anywhere oil is sold. Be sure to check the owners manual for specific temperature ranges for each oil weight.

answer 2
You can use virtually any 10W30 oil. I prefer synthetic oil, which is the type I use in all my engines, including my tractors & vehicles. Synthetic oil will not thicken in very cold weather, so starting engines is easier on the battery and your arm for manual start engines. I like the Wal*Mart house brand of synthetic oil because it's much cheaper than name brands. I would also strongly recommend fuel stabilizer added to the gasoline to prevent its deterioration over long periods, which can cause big engine problems. Of course, you can run the engine out of fuel, and drain any remaining in the tank, but I find it easier to use the stabilizer. I use POR15 stabilizer.

Question

Shaft side clearance

On the shaft side of the engine, does any part of the engine protrude beyond the point where the shaft comes out of the engine? I ask because where the engine will be mounted is close to other things on the equipment on the shaft side of the engine.

answer 3
I just put one on my chipper. It uses a flat steel mounting plate that the engine bolts to. Works fine—nothing sticks out beyond the mounting surface. The oil filler/dipstick ports are right up against the mounting plate, but they can still be used.

In most cases, yes. The shaft dimensions are the most critical to match when replacing an engine. This engine has a shaft that is the same diameter and slightly (.016") longer than the shaft on your existing Briggs engine. Weather this engine will be a bolt in replacement will depend on your specific application.

This engine has been used in a wide variety of applications by our customers and the feedback has been extremely favorable. Over 97% of customers that have written a review on this item say that they would recommend it to a friend.

This is a 6 hp engine I believe the Briggs engine your refering to is a 10 hp. I guess it would depend on what you are useing it for. I do know that the mounting is the same. Northern does offer a larger model and it cost a little more. I purchased this engine to replace a Briggs 5 hp and am very happy with it.The price was very good. I believe the larger model is still less cost than the Briggs model

Yes, the standard Briggs 5 HP engine layout is exactly the same. Mounting bolt pattern, shaft size and placement etc are all the same. I've used two of them to replace two different Briggs 5 HP engines! They work great!

My experience with these engines is that they are MUCH more capable than the Briggs and if you keep the oil changed and the fuel clean, you should never need any replacement parts. I've been using these engines for over 2 years now without a hiccup. By the time you wear one out, at the price, just replace it! Probably cost you less money than replacement parts for a "name brand" engine!
