Gel batteries are not required, however they recommended by Xantrex for optimum performance. This unit could be also be used with AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries or a variety of other deep cycle configurations. The reason that the performance is better with gel or Agm batteries is: Gel and Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries can dispense power at a higher rate than flooded cells. Deep-cycle flooded Cells cannot deliver more than 1/4 of their rated amp-hour capacity in amps without lowering their total capacity.
