Question

Hose diameter vs NPT size

Some hoses have different hose and NPT sizes while others are the same size Why? Does the smaller NPT size restrict air flow? I want max air flow out to the air tool. Also, how do I determine the quick connect size on my compressor? I want to get correct size fittings and hoses.

The fittings will depend on the tools and the air compressor you are using.

Most air tools and line connections have 1/4 NPT fittings on them. This is the "norm" for most air tools. The hose that has a 3/8" ID with 1/4" fittings on each end will create more air pressure coming out so you are not losing any realized air flow to most air tools. In some instances a very large tool may call for a certain size air line from the source to the tool. That is usually in industrial machine tools though. You can buy hoses with the same size fittings as the hose ID. They will cost more. You can also cut the smaller ends off and put barb fittings with the same ID as the hose on it. The owners manual for the compressor should tell you what size and type of couplers it has. Most applications will have type "M" quick couplers. The quick couplers usually have the size and type stamped on them. Hope this helps.
