Yes you will have an extra 2 HP that will not harm the unit at all, also you will spend a little more in electricity, remember that the cost of the electricity will be for the time you will work with your compressor, those 2 extra HP will need to be fed and they will rise the electricity bill each month, than the 3 HP.
Go with the 5 HP and change it whenever you can in order to save in electricity bill, the 5 HP will do the work as well as the 3 HP.

Yes, I used the motor off a 5hp "Sears" oil less noisy compressor and it has no problems whatsoever, I reach full compression in a 30 gal reservoir in just over 4 minutes. My flywheel runs 811 RPM after using the smallest pulley I had off the 3400 RPM motor.

Is the pump directional,or can it be operated CW-CCW?Also what are the recommendations for the breaking in of this pump?Thanks!

It can only go one direction which is CCW. It is recommended to fill the pump with oil and open up the valve and let it vent to the atmosphere for about 10 minutes. Then shut off the valve and let it build the air pressure.

This pump is directional, I would have to go watch mine run to give you a definitive answer. This is a very good rugged pump and I would recommend that you figure out a motor solution if your motor happens to run the wrong way, this pump is that good.
As far as the break in procedure goes, they do include the procedure in the package, which is a well built wooden crate. My pump was broken in by running it free-wheel [no piping] for 20 minutes and then oil change.
I tied in a line voltage "Hobbs" meter to record the accumulative running hours for my 20 hour oil changes.

The CFM at 40 PIS is approximately 11.5. This is a twin piston single stage unit.

The minimum RPM's is 580 and the maximum RPM's for this pump is 1250.
