A Plug aerator actually pulls plugs out of the lawn. Pieces of your lawn are removed so that a direct open link is made between the surface air and the nutritious soil below. The Spike aerator stabs the compacted lawn without removing any of it. If your lawn thatch problem is serious, you can hardly guarantee that soil, air, water, and grass will find each other just because you've put a spike through the knotted roots; that doesn't necessarily mean aeration. With plugs, you know that the grass roots are going to reconnect with the soil. Spiking will only work if the aeration problem is extremely small or localized.

I guess it depends on your needs. I prefer the plug aerator, as it leaves slightly larger holes in the ground for water to sink in.

I believe plug aerating is better since it seems to break up the ground a better and allow your lawn to breath.

answer 4
Plug is better, because it removes compacted soil out,
The Spike goes in and packs the soil around the spike.

answer 5
Spiking can actually pack the ground more,as it forces the spike in to make a slit. The corer actually cuts and pulls a plug each knife, each turn, leaving the plug on top of the ground. This gives the plug and the soil around the hole it leaves behind a chance to loosen up and absorb water and nutrients better. So imho coring has many advantages over spiking. One of which is that it seems to help level or equalize your ground as the plugsbreak down and settle back in.

I have heard on a weekly lawn and garden radio show that spikes do little. If you are reseeding the plug style is the only way to go.I use mine on a lot in northern Mi. where we have to drive on it when we are there.Using an aerator several times a year have made a huge difference.

You definitely have to add weight to the top of the aerator or it will not punch through the ground. The amount of weight you have to add will depend greatly on how wet the ground is. The wetter the ground means less weight which should equate to fewer hp required to pull the aerator if that makes sense. I max out the weight and with my 25 hp tractor it pulls it no problem...

Question

What is the depth of the platform that holds the weight?

Recently I received an answer to my first question regarding the dimensions of just the platform itself. I knew it was 50 in in length. The answer I received added that it was 18 in top to bottom. Is that top to bottom, meaning to the ground? I need to know the depth of the platform from front to back. Thanks!
