Questions & Answers for "FREE SHIPPING - NorthStar Belt Drive Single-Stage Portable Air Compressor - 2 HP, 20-Gallon, Vertical, 5.0 CFM"

Question

Is this compressor suitable for a staight line sander?

Would it work for intermittent use, or not at all? I have a project that would benefit from a line sander, but after it is done I likely won't be using the sander very often, so I can't see spending big bucks on a high capacity compressor.

This compressor is suitable to run any air tool that requires 5.5 or less CFM at 90 psi. The straight line sanders sold by Northern Tool does require a compressor that produces higher CFMs.

Can't speak to a sander, but I used this recently with a cutoff wheel for a small project (don't recall the CFM, but it's pretty high). It drained pretty quickly with constant use, but letting the tank recover I was able to work in bursts and in some cases I started again before it has fully recovered and shut off. I ran the compressor pretty hard that day but it got the job done and didn't complain. If I had to use the cutoff wheel more frequently, I'd look for a bigger unit.

Question

Location of water drain

I noticed the tank drain is off to the side of the tank. Is that the location it pulls from inside the tank, or is there an internal tube that pulls water from the bottom of the tank?

My concern is that you would always have 2-3" of water in the tank if it is collecting from the location of the valve itself.

Thanks,
Jacob

The location of the drain valve is on the bottom right hand of the tank. The location will allow the tank to be completely drained. Drain water from the receiver tank daily. Water left in the tank can cause the tank to weaken and corrode, increasing the risk of tank rupture.

I make a habit of carefully tipping the unit on it's side to drain any water. But yes, there is some that will gather because the drain is slightly above the very bottom.

Question

Oil/Filters Included?

At the bottom of the web page, it says that you will need the North Star air compressor startup kit. Is this extra purchase a requirement or does the compressor ship with oil and filters?

The oil and filters are included with this compressor. The startup kit is the replacement filters and oil. The startup kit extends the warranty one year if it is purchased (and used) with the air compressor.

The operating limitation temperatures are 15F (-9C) or above 125F (52C). If temperatures consistently drop below 32F in an unheated building protect the safety/relief and drain valves from freezing.

It already has a very-heavy-duty installed power cord for 115 volts. Recommend using on 20 amp circuit but will work on 15 amp though.

How much time from completely empty to full?

How much time does it take for this compressor to fill the tank starting at 0 psi (assuming that no air is being used during the filling cycle)? I'm trying to determine how much quicker this compressor will be compared to my current 20 gal. model.
