The opening required for using this Northern Industrial gate latch is approximately 2 to 2-3/4 inches.

I unfortunately found out the hard way that there needs to be at least 4 inches from the gate to the mounting post. I only left 1 inch when I set my post. When I got the latch I realized my mistake and had to cut into my post to gain enough clearance. (luckily I had an 8 inch post so it does not look too bad).

Will this work with round fence post? How wide is the latch that bolts onto the fence post ?

This can be mounted to a round post that will accommodate the bolt holes that are 2.5 inches apart. Six inch diameter and bigger would be recommended.
