Question

Does it have to be a fireplace to insert?

I am thinking of putting in my living room which currently does not have a fireplace, so saying that, can a build a faux fireplace around this unit? Do the walls need to have some sort of heat shield like firebrick or something else?

The fireplace insert does need to be installed in a zero clearance fireplace or an existing masonry fireplace. This can not be used as a self standing unit.

Question

What does it mean to "be installed in a zero clearance fireplace"?

Like another, I have an existing framed and drywalled opening that is currently being used by a sealed gas fireplace. I would like to replace this with a pellet stove by removing it and sliding the pellet stove in it's place. The current gas fireplace sits in the opening even with the floor. There is plenty of room behind, above and to the sides for any required clearances.

The zero clearance fireplace means that this stove has had extra testing done on it for wood burning and gas fireplaces. It would work in your existing opening. The clearances that need to be followed are listed below:
A. Unit to sidewall 7”
B. Unit to side trim 7”
C. Unit top to top trim 9.25”
D. Unit top to mantle 9.25"
E. Hearth floor to mantle 32”
F. Noncombustible floor protection, front 6".
G. NONCOMBUSTIBLE FLOOR PROTECTION, sides 6”
