Do these radios need to be in 'line of sight' to work?

We live in the mountains and I wonder if the radios will communicate if a hill blocks 'line of sight' between them.

The range of 18 miles is based off of optimum conditions which are over water, open rural areas or areas where you can see the other person.

I bought a set for my kids. Radios become very distorted within a 1/4 mile line of sight. I do not recommend them.

How strong is the signal?

If I was in the basement level mechanical room of a concrete structure (school, factory, etc.), would it have enough strength to reach someone 5-6 floors up?

We are unable to say how far this will reach as the reception through this material may not be clear being these are made for line of sight use.
