The main wire coming off the panel is 7.5 feet long. The other two cords are for either hooking up directly up to a 12 volt battery with alligator clips or through a 12 volt outlet. Those two cords are 1 foot long.

Question

float charger vs. overcharge protection

You note that "This Coleman Solar Battery Maintainer can be left on battery for extended periods. It does have overcharge protection, but it is not a float charger."

Can you be more specific about the difference? I thought there were 2 types of solar chargers: float and trickle, and that a float charger was, by definition, different from a trickle charger (no overcharge protection) in that float chargers can be left on a battery for extended periods without harm, as they cut off charging power once the battery is fully charged to prevent overcharging, and then turn on the power to the battery once a drain is detected. Why is the Coleman 58003 not considered a float charger? Thanks!

Staff Answer
Float charging is a type of trickle charge using float voltage. Float voltage will utilize different voltages to compensate for different batteries that have a varying self-discharge rate. This Coleman Solar Battery Maintainer will trickle charge, but always at the same rate. Most all trickle charges will have built in overcharge protection. Solar chargers under 15 watts will all have protection. Once you get above 15 watts you would need a charge controller that would act as overcharge protection.
