The helmet does require 2 AAA Alkaline batteries or rechargeable Alkaline batteries.

I am using standard alkaline in mine with no issues what so ever, more dependable than NI-CAD or NIHM as they loose a lot of charge when sitting between uses.

The way this helmet works is that it starts and functions from the batteries until there is enough power in the solar cell to operate the helmet, which is all of the time outdoors and any time you are laying a bead, Then that takes over. It isn't really a "charging" circuit.

This helmet is suitable for acetylene welding. The shade number on the grinding mode is a fixed 3.5.
