Yes, you may remove the grass bag and either mulch or rear-discharge the clippings. Some of the photos on this site are not up to date, but others are, and you can see the Clip Director control (green knob) on the mower deck.
When set to MULCH, the deck is sealed off, and clipping get circulated and re-cut by the blades until a fine mulch is created, then dispersed back to the lawn. When set the BAG, a shutter opens and the clippings will be blown into the grass bag, or, if the bag is removed, out the rear and then directed down to the lawn. Yes it can. It has a flap that would cover the area that the mulch would normally enter the bag.
