Generac’s 7kW Core Power generators’ minimum clearance guidelines require that the unit be installed at least 60 inches from any windows, wall openings, or combustible surface. A 36 inch spacing is required if the surface has a fire resistant rating of at least one hour per NFPA 37. Clearance from the ends of the generator should be a minimum of 36 inches, depending on the material’s fire rating located near the unit. This spacing would include shrubs, trees, and any kind of vegetation. Clearance at the top should be a minimum of 60 inches from any structure, overhang, or projections from the wall. The generator should not be placed under a deck or other structure that is closed in and would limit or contain air flow. Further information on proper installation can be found in the installation guidelines. We also recommend contacting your local inspector, as state and local codes may vary, and will supersede manufacturer recommendations for installation near a structure.
Please note that prior models or other series units may not meet these exceptions. Utilizing the unit’s model or serial number to locate the owner’s manual or installation guidelines will ensure that the correct distances are followed. As for the closer placement that larger generators are afforded, this is due in part to the fact that their enclosures may have a one hour fire rating, meaning they can be installed closer to a surface than a Core Power unit, which does not feature a one-hour fire rated enclosure. If you are interested in other models to see what their installation distances are, please contact Generac directly.
