Questions & Answers for NorthStar Portable Generator - 8000 Surge Watts, 6600 Rated Watts, Electric Start, EPA Phase 3 and CARB-Compliant

Question

What is the derating factor for 115 degree ambient?

How well will this generator perform in an Arizona climate when the ambient temperature hits 118 degrees? I have confidence in the engine, but what about the generator itself?

(Some of the made-in-China generators require ridiculously low ambients.)

There is not an ambient temperature rating for this Italian made pump. The heat is more likely to affect the engine.

Question

Ramp up time from no load condition???

I know this gen-set has an idle control that will let the engine idle with a no load condition, once a load is sensed how long does it take to ramp the RPM to 3600? My concern would be electric motors that do not tolerate low voltage during start up.

What is the RPM during no load conditions?

The idle control on the NorthStar Generator does not state a RPM rating when at no load. This will ramp up immediately when power is needed. The idle control function is not to be operated when the generator is being used for back up power for a home as power is always needed. The idle control is only to be used when operating equipment such as a drill or a saw.

Question

Duty cycle

Is this unit rated for 100% duty cycle? My main concern is since I will be using this as a back-up during a power outage it may have to run between 10-13 hrs per day for multiple days. I need a unit that is robust and reliable enough to be able to handle this condition.

The NorthStar Generator can run continuous until the gas tank needs refilling. At this time, the generator would need to be shut off and left to cool for two minutes before removing the fuel cap and refueling. Instructions for this are shown in the manual included.

Question

How to connect to 3-wire outlet?

My current generator plugs into a 240V outlet in the basement that is a 3-wire range outlet (c. 1993) that comes from the main house electrical panel.
With a new generator, how can I connect the L14-30 4-wire system to this outlet?

We do not recommend using a generator to backfeed power to your house. It can be dangerous and is most likely illegal in your area. We always recommend using a transfer switch with a 30 amp power inlet box that will match the L14-30 generator plug.
