The NorthStar Generator cannot be used outside in the elements. It needs to be sheltered in some way. The shelter would need to be larger than the size of the generator for ample air supply and airflow around the unit. A cover for this generator while it's running is not available.

The NorthStar 5500 does not have a fuel gauge. You would need to open the cap and visually check fuel level.

The size of a generator is determined by the amp draw of the items that the generator will be running. May we suggest viewing our Generator Buyers Guide website at http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/buyers-guides_generators for more information on how to determine which generator will work for you.

The Honda engine used on the NorthStar 5500 can be converted to run on natural gas. The conversion would need to be pre-approved and done by a certified Honda dealer. Any other scenario would void the warranty on the engine.

Yes, the NorthStar Generators can be run continuously. The only time you would need to stop is when refilling the fuel tank.

I use my generator most often for standby emergency power. When I do, it runs continuously for as many hours (except for twice a day refueling) as the outage lasts. I only needed it for 16 straight hours for Sandy, but it ran "continuously" for seven days for my longest outage. I've never experienced overheating or any other symptoms of continuous duty. My 5500 watt NorthStar generator has needed no maintenance except the routine in about five years of operation.

answer 2
the voltage and frequency stay very close to 120 and 60, changes slightly with load

distortion is < 5% according to the test sheet that came with it

power is very clean - no device I have run on the generator has had any problem, including the furnace controller

The Honda GX270 engine on the NorthStar Generator uses a forced splash oil lubrication system.

answer 2
splash lubrication, no filter or pump

100 hour oil change interval

engine holds 1.1 qts oil, which makes changes easy - just dump a quart in and you're done, the rest is whatever didn't drain out, no measuring

some others have a 0.9 qt capacity - what a pain to fill without overflowing - stupid
