Question

Steam pressure washer #157305

Is this unit big enough or create enough steam to clear ice dams on my roof? I have a small unit that will melt ice but it takes forever to do even a small area. I want to melt the ice in my gutters and in the valleys of my roof.

If not his unit what do you suggest?

The number that will determine the amount of time that a job will take with any pressure washer is gallons per minute (GPM). This pressure washer is rated at 1.5 GPM which is on the low side for completing a job such as ice removal. I would suggest that you look for a hot water pressure that will provide at least 2.5 GPM for removing ice dams from your roof. The more GPM that a unit provides the faster the job will be done, so in this case more is better. Keep in mind that the price of the machine usually goes up as the GPM rating does, so the machine that you ultimately end up purchasing will be determined by the value that you put on your time. (more up front cost typically will equal fewer hours of labor). See links below for some suggestions of hot water units that will provide 2.5 GPM or more. Keep in mind that some of these units need to be plugged into an electrical outlet and some of them are stand alone units. The one that will best meet your needs will depend on your specific situation (most of the plug-in units require 230 volt power).

Ice dams are a fairly slow process. I recommend using 210F water vs steam. Get the hot water under the ice and lift it off by hand in small manageable sections. DO NOT spray up the roof.

Question

electric or not?

We are in the market for a hot water electric pressure washer. This unit says it is electric but it seems as though that is just for the pressure washer side? We are an auto detail shop/hand car wash and operate in a parking garage. The heater I presume runs on diesel/kerosene. My question is can we operate this without outdoor ventilation?

Our NorthStar electric steam and hot water pressure washer runs off electricity, the burner for the pressure washer is powered by diesel #1 & #2, kerosene or fuel oil. To operate this NorthStar pressure washer safely, it will need to be vented in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and local ordinances.

Electricity runs the pump and burner. It requires a 30amp circuit (240v). I would probably not reccommend running the unit inside. I'm sure the manufacturer doesn't reccommend it either, for obvious reasons. Not saying you couldn't. I would simbly purchase enough hose (100') so you could set it outside and still reach where ever you need. Kerosene will burn the cleanest, but also is the most expensive.

For this NorthStar pressure washer, it heats the water hot enough to create steam and it is equipped with a nozzle that has a small enough orifice to diffuse the water to make a steam, the remaining additional nozzles are your common pressure washer nozzles.

Question

Can the heater be used without the pump?

This would work great for cleaning exhaust hoods but can you disconnect the pump and use the burner with a separate gas pressure washer for removing graffiti?

I know the stand alone burners use flow switches to be able to do it.

NorthStar does not recommend disconnecting the pump to use a separate gas pressure washer with this unit. We do, however, offer a 4000 psi Pressure Washer Heater made specifically for this purpose. Check out my product recommendations below for item 157495.

The pressure washer is set to the maximum rated pressure when it leaves the factory. To adjust the pressure, turn the unloader knob counter-clockwise. While the unit can be dialed down to very low pressure, there is a flow switch inside that triggers the heater. You would need at least 500-10000 psi to get hot water, and 50 psi would not work.

This pressure washer requires a 20 amp, 120 volt dedicated circuit(nothing else can be plugged into the circuit) so it draws 2400 watts continuously. The burner to heat the water is not controlled by electricity, it runs on diesel. A generator capable of producing 2400 watts from a single 20 amp circuit is suitable to run this pressure washer.

When winterizing the NorthStar Hot Water Pressure Washer, turn the starter a few times until the antifreeze comes out of the pump outlet. The antifreeze should flow through the pump for winter protection. Blowing air threw the pump is not advised.
