Yes, you can add an edge to a knife that does not currently have one by going through a progression of different grits. Work Sharp does make an item specifically designed for adding an edge or fabricating a knife. Please see my recommendation below.

This tool is awesome. It can sharpen pretty much anything with an edge, including chisels. My suggestion though, is to be VERY careful and do it freehand, without the guide, due to the difference in angles between chisels and knives.

answer 4
This is a tool that is made to work for approximately twenty minutes out of every hour, so it has proper cooling time. The intermittent switch is for sharpening knives ect. Just hold the switch (power) for a moment while running your knife through, then power back off. The other position of constant on you may need when sharpening, or shaping items, such as shovel blades, lawnmower blades ect. You place the cartridge in a diferent position for such items so you can use the tool freehand. You place items such as a shovel in a vice, or something to hold it firmly, them move the cartridge position down, and power on constantly, and get to work. This is great and allows much more versitility.

Exceptionally large blades will likely not fit into the sharpening guide. However after removing the guide, the sharpener will accommodate much larger items like lawn mower blades or an axe head. It can also be used with Damascus steel blades.

The device will have its limits, but if it's too big, one can take the guide off and sharpen with a free belt approach. This is what I do with machetes or any other large, wide blade, including Kurkri etc.

I have used my sharpener to sharpen several katanas some of them with damascus steel blades. It does a good job of it but you have to watch the angle of the blade. because the blades are fairly wide they don't fit into the guides provided with the sharpener and will therefore scratch the side of the blade. However, I have been able to use the widest guide as a rest and then free hand the angle. I will probably end up making a special guide to fit the katana. The blades do get really sharp and because of the rolled edge are resistant to dulling and chipping.
