This is not designed to be used to grip cable.

I doubt it. Maybe if adapter pads were made for a cable, but a cable puller is what you really need. If cable had a loop or clamp it might work but would mangle it a bit.

What are the dimensions ( inches ) of the spiked, square, gripper part of the puller ?

On this pallet puller the griper part is 3" L x 1 15/16" W x 7/16" H with 1/2" long spikes.
