Questions & Answers for Dutton-Lainson Winch with Automatic Brake - 800-Lb. Capacity

Question

Reverse Handle?

Is it possible to reverse the side of of the winch from which you crank? I would be using it as a winch to raise a keel in a small sailboat, but the winch is backwards for the existing mounting points. Reversing handle (putting it on the opposite side) would fit my use perfectly.
Thank you!

Yes, it's a smaller version of mine. No free spooling. The auto brake holds the load in place when the handle is not being turned.

answer 3
I use this almost exclusively on my deer feeders. To get it to release on a full feeder you might need to turn it in slightly and then back but it does release very smoothly. I have been using then for ten years on many winch feeders.

Staff Answer
The winch would use 1 pound pressure for every 30 pounds pull at the full 800 pound capacity. 300 pounds would be 1/2 that or less and would be easy to crank.

Question

What is the rear projection (behind mounting plate) measurement of the crank handle of the 800# unit? How does this compare to the 1200# unit?

I am interested in mounting this in a vertical orientation but I need to know the amount of rearward clearance necessary from the wall to allow for proper operation. Thanks.
