The maximum log diameter is determined by the type of wood that is being split, the harder the wood that you are splitting, the smaller the diameter will need to be. In most cases this splitter will split a log up to 16" in diameter.

We've done some 18" by splitting half and rotating to do other half although some split on one pass.

As big as you want...if it's DRY and will split. Wet logs will hang up and not split cleanly. The splitting wedge is about 8 inches tall. I had no issues splitting logs 20 inches in diameter.

Multiple 24 inch Pine and Oak logs. The splitter never even flinched. The splitter pushed through a 3 inch knot in a pine log like it wasn't even there. Under heavy strain the engine does a little energy boost and away it goes. I've yet to put a log in that it couldn't split.

Throttle is manually set. Since pump works best with full rpm of engine, that is where I run mine. Engine is very efficient and easy on fuel. I set mine at idle manually if I will be cooling engine for shutdown or between split sessions if just a short break is needed.

No. You set the throttle and leave it. Throttle position must be done manually. This is not a problem and the unit does not need to be run at full throttle IOT split. I use about 1/2 throttle.

No it does not have an auto idle. But it does have a throttle which allows you to put it in idle. Also it starts so easily that I shut it off if I am taking more than a minute or two away from splitting.

This Powerhorse splitter has a 208 cc engine which was previously rated at 6 HP. The cycle time is 6.5 seconds. It has a 11 GPM two-stage hydraulic pump. The reservoir is 3 gallons. There is not a four-way wedge, but it does split in both directions, splitting twice as fast as regular log splitters. This Powerhorse log splitter combines quality and value in a high production machine. Grab the reins and take it for a ride!

answer 2
Per stated specs, the HP rating of the 208cc engine is 6HP. Not sure about cycle time -- haven't timed it, but it's fast. Oil pump is 11 GPM per the manual. It takes about 3 gallons of hydraulic oil. I haven't seen a 4-way wedge for it; Powerhorse is proprietary to Northern Tool, and since Northern Tool doesn't have a 4-way edge for it I would say no.

No, this Powerhorse log splitter does not accept a four way wedge application.

This is a dual split log splitter, meaning it will split logs in both directions, preventing a four way wedge to operate properly.

The I-beam assembly is open at the top to allow the wedge to go back and forth, I imagine that the log would bind and wood chips entering the cylinder area over time would ruin the splitter.

answer 2
I would say probably not a good idea. The wedge travels back and forth over the beam. Horizontal wedge blades would tend to bind the wood down to the beam and side tables. Would probably also overstress the weld joint at the base of the vertical wedge. This unit has a thin slicing wedge that's welded to a telescoping steel tube. As designed it splits without developing extreme pressure on the wedge weld. A 4-way wedge would likely tear itself out of the tubing in short order.

The splitter is proprietary to Northern Tool. Since Northern Tool does not market a 4-way wedge for this splitter, I'm assuming it's not designed to take a 4-way wedge.

By selecting a splitter with a higher tonnage rating you will have the option of splitting lager diameter, harder wood than you will be able to split with a unit that has a lower tonnage rating. The 20 ton Powerhorse splitter also has a faster cycle time than the 13 ton splitter. Other than the amount of force that they produce and the cycle time, the function of the 13 and 20 ton splitters is the same.

If you compare the two units, the 20 ton unit has a larger cylinder and handles a longer log than the 13 ton unit.

I also looked at the 13T over the 20T. The main selling point for me was the pump - 11 GPM vs. 3 GPM. I also believe the larger unit has high-speed wheels and a hitch assembly. For me, and taken together, they are worth the difference in cost.

I don't see a need to. Plus the extra force needed to split a large log may bog down machine the stops on either end of machine are not that high so there would not be enough support. This machine is fast enough the way it is. If you need to split that much wood i would recommend a commercial machine but that would cost a lot more.
