NorthStar Horizontal/Vertical Log Splitter - 30-Ton, 160cc

Item# 1109
This NorthStar® Horizontal/Vertical Log Splitter is powered by a quality Honda GX160 OHV engine with idle control to split logs up to 25in. long. Uses a horizontal shaft engine, engineered for a long life with auto idle/throttle control that also saves fuel and reduces noise. Patented log stripper clears log from retracting wedge. Log cradle prevents split wood from falling onto the ground. Add exclusive NorthStar 4-way wedge wings (#1143, sold separately) and split logs 3 times faster! Ram Force (Tons): 30, Max. Your owners book tells you the exact amount of Hyd. Fluid for each splitter. It has a large resevoir so believe adding more is better than running to low. I change every 75 hours.

8 and 1/2 gallons. Read and follow the instructions. After you put oil in engine fill the hyd oil tank almost to full mark. Close filler plug and start engine, cycle the splitter about 5 times and leave it in retracted position. Stop engine and check fluid level, it will need filling to the full mark ( total 8 1/2 gallons ) do not over fill. It will only squirt out of the top when in use.

The specs call for 8.5 gallons but you will only need 7.5 gallons of hydraulic fluid. You will also need .5 quart of 10-30 oil for the engine.

This NorthStar log splitter calls for 8.5 gallons of 10wt AW32, ASLE H-150, or ISO32 hydraulic oil.

The engine ships without oil, you will want to add SAE 10W-30 engine oil to the "full" mark on the dipstick before start-up.

Yes!!! It is a great feature. It is the reason I chose this as compared to a competitior. It idles down when the ram returns to the open position. You can walk away or perform another task for a couple minutes without the engine roaring away & burning up fuel.

It is kinda what ever works best for you. This is a top notch splitter an will handle about anything you put in it. i split alot of knotty and stringy woods like red oak and pecan an wild cherry and i found that it works best to take a 4 inch hand grinder and put a edge on it.

Re: Shipping considerations item 1109 - what are the dimensions and weight of the boxes?

How many boxes are contained in the shipment and what are the dimensions and weight of the boxes?

I need to know this info as I may purchase the unit, and need to know if the various boxes will fit into the bed of a long box pick up truck. I also have loading / unloading considerations and need to know the weight of the various boxes in addition to their dimensions.

Question

I'd like to purchase this for my husband for Christmas,

Is there any way this splitter can be put in the back of my Honda Odyssey? A 4 x 8 sheet of plywood will fit, but I'm wondering about the logistics of getting such a heavy piece of equipment inside a van.

This item is shipped in two crates and requires assembly. The dimensions of the individual crates are: 75.25 x 26x 19 and 27.3 x 18.5 x 17.25. When packaged in this manner they should easily fit in your vehicle. The measurements of this splitter when fully assembled are: 89.3"L X 42.9"W X 40.3"H

Ask the store manager of your local store what size shipping crate this unit uses. I took delivery of the larger 37 ton unit and it fit in a 6-1/2 foot pick up bed. It comes bolted to a metal framework. However there is no way you can unload it from an Odyssey without either using (very carefully) a fork lift, or have two people disassemble the crate in the van and remove it piece by piece. The I-beam and the engine are the heaviest pieces. You might put in that piece of plywood to protect the floor of the van...and secure it some way in case of sudden stops!
