This pump will not transfer oil as it is designed for water transfer only. Northern offers a huge selection of pumps that are suitable for transfer of home heating oil.

The Portable Transfer Pump is designed to pump only, clean, clear water. You could use this if you are only pumping water, but if the water is mixed with oil, you would want to use a fuel transfer pump.

Question
Need to drain water heater
I need to drain a water heater to the outside. Pump can be close to the drain on the heater tank but I will need to lift the water about 10 feet before the discharge hose falls. Total lenght of the discharge hose will be about 40 feet. Will this pump work for that?

I believe it is adequate. I use it to water my garden from water stored in rain barrels and a 100 ft hose.

This Portable Transfer Pump is designed for use with only clean, clear water. Northern Tool does not sell any 115 volt utility pumps designed for use with antifreeze, but does have a 12 volt. See link below.

This Portable Transfer Pump does not have an automatic pressure switch. It would simply run anytime it is plugged in. Northern Tool does sell a 115 volt utility pump that would have a pressure switch, and would automatically turn on when pressure drops below a certain psi. See link below.

will this pump pump out from the top of a standing 55 gallon drum or does the drum have to be on its side for the water to free flow into the pump.

This pump is rated for water use rather than gas or other flammable liquids. We don't have a similar style pump rated for gas. Click on the item listed below for a 115 volt pump rated for gas.
