This full trash water pump can move muck or sludge if it consists of 75% water so it would not work for either of your applications. A diaphragm pump is designed to pump water with a high solids content, including mud and sludge so it would be better suited for your applications. Click the links below to view examples of diaphragm pumps.

I have a similar situation (without the sand). The pump does a great job on muck, but the critical component is the intake. Remember that you are pumping suspended sediment. A floating intake with lots of intake holes works quite well. My other recommendation is to use a compressor to drive air down into the muck. A long chunk of cast iron pipe connected to an air compressor lifts the sediment up so the pump can pick it up.

This full trash water pump is not intended for use with less that a 3" diameter suction hose. Click the links below to view 2" trash pumps and a 2" foot valve to retain the prime. The discharge hose diameter for a 2" pump could be reduced to 1-1/2", but reducing the suction hose diameter is not advised. Northern Tool doesn't carry 1-1/2" trash pumps.

The Powerhorse Full Trash Water Pump can handle solids up to 1-1/8". If the weeds did break up into pieces small than that, it may work. If not, the weeds can get caught up in the impeller and damage the pump. We recommend using a suction strainer to avoid the problem. See links below.

Question

Can this pump handle thick sludge?

Looking to pump out the bottom of a brine saturation pit. The material has the consistency of thick mud and will have lots of solids in it. Also worried that the brine will corrode the inside of the pump.
