What psi range is the first stage and how do I adjust it?

I'm hooking this to a 5 hp electric motor with a 1.15 service factor and would like to fine tune the psi limit for the first stage.

The pump is set to 13.6 GPM at 650 PSI. To adjust, there is a unload valve (hex head cap) on the side. You would remove that cap and there is a slotted screw. If you turn that to the left 1/4 turn you would lower the pressure by 100 PSI. If turned to the right 1/4 turn it would raise the PSI by 100.

Staff Answer
The Concentric/Haldex Hydraulic Pump does not require a "flooded siphon", meaning that it will operate fine when mounted above the fluid reservoir provided all your fittings are air tight. It will have a rated draw of 4-6 feet depending on how far above sea level it is located.

The 5 HP rating refers to 5 HP @ 2000 psi but the maximum psi is 3000 psi which would require the 6 HP rating. So to be able to utilize the full capability of the pump, the correct rating is 6 HP.

I installed this pump on a 5 hp engine and it works OK, but I can stall the engine before it builds full pressure. I get around that problem by bumping the lever a few times so the engine can recover between bumps. This is only required when it first bites into a big log. The rest of the time it operates quickly without bogging the engine. If I were doing it over, I would choose the 11 GPM pump for a 5 HP engine.

answer 2
No. This pump is meant to run in the clockwise direction only. Looking at your engine from the rope starter side of the engine will tell you the direction of the engine, normally most engines are clockwise. Since the pump in mounted directly behind the engine, the pump runs the same direction.

This Haldex hydraulic pump only requires a 6 HP engine to operate properly so your engine will do the job.

answer 2
In my opinion, a 6.5 hp engine will be fine. My 7.5 hp runs this fine at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. It does not lug down or try to stall the engine at all. The second stage will kick in when the splitter hits a knot or a dense piece of wood. When this happens it is like the engine has no resistance at all but the ram will slow down and power through the wood. I would even say that this would probably work with a 5 hp engine, but would not be as efficient because it would need to run at a slightly higher throttle setting to keep the engine from working too hard when the pump is in the first stage or " normal running stage " when it is moving the rated 13.6 gpm of hydraulic oil.

answer 3
I build wood splitters and always use a 6.5 HP engine
with this pump and have a fast cycle time,
This pump is meant to run at full throttle, 3,800rpm.
Running it at half throttle will give you less power and a slower cycle time.

Yes, in a vertical application a special mounting bracket is required which we do not carry. The engine must have a cast iron flywheel on it.

answer 2
In general, hydraulic pumps are not sensitive to orientation. However, for best results, the pump should be mounted in such a way that its inlet is always below the oil level in the tank.
